The human prehistory of Vermont has attracted considerable interest since the late nineteenth century. Numerous Indian artifacts were collected across the Champlain Valley. These provided initial information about the areas where people generally chose to live, the types of artifacts that people used, and the time depth involved. It was not until the 1970s that scientific excavations began to provide some of the details. The University of Vermont and the Vermont Archaeological Society were at the forefront of this advancement. With the founding of the Consulting Archaeology Program at the University of Vermont in 1978 and the fact that all federal agencies were required to consider the effects their actions might have on significant historic sites, knowledge began to expand at an accelerated pace. These articles reflect the early growth of professional archaeology in Vermont.
While at the University of Vermont (1978-2000), much of my writing focused on archaeological topics, including being principal investigator and author or coauthor of 204 Cultural Resource Management reports for the Vermont Agency of Transportation and other clients. Summary compendiums of the studies for VAOT and other projects, as well as several individual reports, can be found in the files below. The articles listed below draw on the field work that led to the discovery of particularly significant pre-contact archaeological sites.

This extended context would help later researchers evaluate the significance of sites that were subsequently identified.
